Poplitel-Tibial Bypass

OverView

The main artery, known as the femoral artery in the thigh which supplies the blood flow to each leg this artery is located behid the knee. The popliteal artery are divided into three tibial arteries which supplies the blow flow to the lower leg and foot, all these arteries, are common areas for plaque to build up in the arteries, and results in blockage of the arteries(known as stenosis)which can lead to severe loss in circulation to the feet. If the condition is not treated this can lead to the feet becoming clod, painful and discoloured and may also result in developing sores or even gangrene. These symptoms are most common in diabteic patients.

This procedure is common with vascular surgeons who are able to restore blood flow to the legs by performing an arterial bypass.

What is procedure for a Femoral-tibial bypass?

This procedure , of a femoral-tibial bypass is performed by implanting a small tube to carry the blood flow from the femoral artery in the groin directly to the one of the tibial arteries, which bypasses the blocked sections of the leg arteries. This bypass tube(graft) is usually done from the patients own leg veins, usually it is the saphenous vein, which is a part of a network of veins located in the fatty tissue under the skin, usually the surgeons will need to borrow veins from the other leg or even the arms, in other cases surgeons would use plastic tubes for bypass surgery, which in most cases do not work well. Also patients who have open sore or gangrene of the foot also sometimes require surgical removal of the unhealthy tissue in order to obtain complete healing

This is a major surgical procdure, with several days in the hospital and several weeks on the road to recovery, its performed by a well trained and qualified vascular surgeons, it does have a high success rate in relieving the symptoms of poor circulation and a high advantage in saving the leg that might otherwise be amputated.

What To Expect After Surgery

Depending on the intensity of the surgery, you will need to stay in bed for 1-2 days after the surgery. You will need to stay in the hospital for about 3-5 days. You will experience pain from the incisions made in your leg, the pain will gradually decrease after about a week. The doctor will give you pain medication, and you can expect your leg to be swollen for a while, this is normal. Your leg will take up to 2-3 months.

Recovery at home

You will need to take perfect bed rest for at least 2-6 weeks, or even more to fully recover. You will need to have a lot of follow-up visits with the doctor to check and see if the graft is working.
